VALUE STATEMENT

At Bournehall Primary School we value P.E. because:

    • It equips all children with the knowledge, skills and motivation for a healthy and active lifestyle
    • We encourage lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

A PHYSICALLY ACTIVE PUPIL:

    • acquires new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develops an in-depth understanding of PE.
    • willingly practises skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and applies these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
    • has high levels of physical fitness.
    • is able to be physically active for sustained periods of time and understands the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
    • shows initiative and becomes an excellent young leader, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, motivate and instil excellent sporting attitudes in others.
    • has exceptional levels of originality, imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography, knowledge of how to improve their own and others’ performance and the ability to work independently for extended periods of time without the need of guidance or support.
    • fully engages in extra-curricular sport.
    • swims at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and has knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.

CONDITIONS FOR LEARNING

Children tell us that they enjoy P.E. and learn best when they:

    • create dance routines
    • build on their skills through practice, skill games and competitions
    • learn from their mistakes
    • take charge of their activities, like leading warm ups
    • organise equipment for the lessons ahead
    • compete in tournaments both in and out of school

Physical Education:

    • takes into account pupils’ prior knowledge and understanding
    • encourages and develops the skills needed for children to perform individually and as a team
    • encourages reflective thinking, perseverance and team work
    • challenges pupils to do their best
    • includes activities to support the development of skills and movements:
    • locomotion, games, dance and gymnastics (EYFS & KS1)
    • invasion games, net & wall games, outdoor adventurous activities, striking and fielding games, dance and gymnastics (KS2)
    • makes good use of resources that are exciting, high quality and in a quantity that allows full participation

We aim to achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport against 5 key indicators:

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyle
  • The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport

DELIVERY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

At Bournehall, we use the CompletePE Scheme of Work to deliver PE. The scheme was chosen as it meets National Curriculum aims for Physical Education through the following strands:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

These strands are encompassed with the Essentials Curriculum Thresholds Concept of:

  • develop practical skills in order to participate, compete and lead a healthy lifestyle

In Key Stage 1, these strands are taught through activities that incorporate movement and balance; throwing and catching; hitting and striking, as well as through gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor adventurous activities. In Key Stage 2, these strands are taught through a variety of sports including net/wall games; striking & fielding activities; invasion games, as well as through gymnastics, dance and athletics and outdoor adventurous activities.  The scheme gives the children the opportunity to become familiar with and apply a variety of skills within different sports.

Physical Education is taught for two hours per week. This is normally split to a 1 hour indoor lesson & a 1 hour outdoor lesson.
