Place Value
A good understanding of place value (the value of each digit in a number) is vital in primary-school maths. Place value is the value of each digit in a number. It means understanding that 582 is made up of 500, 80 and 2, rather than 5, 8 and 2.
You can use coins to support your child's understanding of 2-digit numbers and place value. You will need some 10p coins and some 1p coins.
1) Give your child a handful of coins and ask them to add them up and tell you the amount - count the tens first and then the ones. For example (image below) - 10, 20, 30, 40 - 40 plus 1 - 41.
2) Write a 2-digit number for your child and ask them to make the amount using 10p and 1p coins.
